Building of the month: 10 Downing Street – among the best

The building complex at 10-12 Downing Street was one of 17 buildings to receive BREEAM Awards, which were presented by One Show reporter Lucy Siegle, at Ecobuild 2013. The Downing Street complex received a special award for the building that has made the most improvement year-on-year in its BREEAM In-Use performance. Other BREEAM Award 2013 winners ranged from Victorian terrace homes in Manchester to office and retail developments in Paris and Istanbul (see list below). BREEAM Outstanding rating is the perfect tonic

The Bombay Sapphire distillery at Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, is the first refurbishment project to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ (design stage) rating. The development includes a 6kW hydro-electric water wheel to allow power generation from the River Test. With a BREEAM 2008 interim score of 86.81% – a particularly impressive achievement for a refurbishment – the gin distillery is the second highest scoring industrial building and is due for completion in Autumn 2013. Greater transparency in UK commercial real estate

The USA-based real estate network and online data sharing portal, Honest Buildings, was officially launched in the UK in February. BRE Global has partnered with Honest Buildings to bring greater transparency to UK commercial real estate, and will the display environmental credentials of thousands of BREEAM certified buildings on the network. Top 50 sustainability rising stars

Building magazine’s recently compiled list of the 50 most talented people under 40 working in sustainable construction, includes Helen Pineo. Certification for PV and solar thermal installation kits

Having been accredited by UKAS, BRE Global is now accepting applications for the certification of pitched roof installation kits for PV and solar thermal systems, against the requirements of MCS 012. After a formal review of the standard, the use of MCS 012 certificated products is expected to become mandatory for MCS solar installations. The growing BREEAM family

With BREEAM National Scheme Operators (NSO) now in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden (as well as the UK) – and with other organisations joining and advanced conversations taking place in countries outside Europe – the BREEAM family is continuing to grow. Antwerp’s green city ambitions

Blue Gate Antwerp will transform a contaminated industrial site into an eco-business park with the help of BREEAM Communities. This site is being developed by the City of Antwerp and the Flemish region. Formerly a busy industrial dockland that now suffers from heavy contamination, flood risk, uneven ground and a lack of public transport, the plan is to transform it into a leading international eco-business park for sustainable logistics, manufacturing and research and development. Help with Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs)

The SMARTWaste Membership Scheme enables SMARTWaste Plan users to benefit from greater flexibility in preparing and implementing SWMPs, and reporting on waste, energy, water and timber – and from BRE’s technical support. Members joining or renewing membership this year include:

Responsible sourcing standard update – stakeholders’ meeting

The process of updating the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products standard BES 6001 (Version 2) started at a workshop on 30 October 2012 – click here for summary notes.  An online consultation to gather further views on the standard was completed on 10 April. First ‘Outstanding’ for BREEAM New Construction

Denton Holme Student Residences in Carlisle has become the first ever Interim (Design Stage) ‘Outstanding’ rated building under the BREEAM New Construction 2011 scheme (multi-residential). The 249-room development, which was assessed by Barry Rankin of GWP Project Services, has transformed a former factory site and is part of efforts to ease student accommodation shortages in Carlisle.  Barry is presenting on the project in a ‘Best of BREEAM’ session at Greenbuild Expo in Manchester on 8 May. Ecobuild India

It is estimated that by 2040, India will be home to the world’s largest urban population. One of the topics being focussed on at Ecobuild India on 16-18 April is Making Sustainable Design and Construction Happen.
