Certification and Listing of Water Saving Products

With water resources currently at an all time low, water conservation in the UK is becoming an increasingly important issue. 

Each person in England and Wales uses an average of 150 litres of water every day and statistics show that over 60% of this potable water is used within the bathroom environment^1.

BRE Global offers Certification and Listing for the following water efficient products:

• Low Flush WC Suites
• Water Efficient Baths
• Water Efficient Terminal Fittings

Certification and Listing of Low Flush WC Suites

The average WC flush volume in the UK is traditionally 9 litres or more. The BRE Global Certification and Listing of Low Flush WC Suites scheme provides independent third party accreditation that flush volume declared by the manufacturer is a specified volume below 6 litres.

This will enable manufacturers to demonstrate the environmental performance of their products in order to contribute to credits for the Code for Sustainable Homes, (Internal potable water is a mandatory element of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the aim of which is to reduce consumption and the maximum number of credits available for this section is 5).  Credits for water saving appliances are also being considered in Ecohomes and within components of BREEAM. 

This scheme provides a benchmark for all manufacturers to work towards and will allow manufacturers to differentiate their products within highly competitive markets.  Clear labelling of the performance of certified products also enables the consumer to make an informed sustainable purchasing decision.

This scheme is the first of its kind for water using appliances and is designed to contribute to the future accreditation of the full bathroom suite including baths and terminal fittings (taps, tap inserts and showers).

 

Certification and Listing of Water Efficient Baths

A bath can use over two-thirds of the average water consumption used by each person in England and Wales each day.¹  The BRE Global Certification and Listing of Water Efficient Baths scheme has been designed to allow product manufacturers to demonstrate the environmental performance of their products, by certifying volumes of baths that are less than those generally in current use.

There is the opportunity to contribute towards the credits determined under the Code for Sustainable Homes. Credits for water saving appliances are also being considered in EcoHomes and components of BREEAM (BRE's Environmental Assessment Method).

 

Certification and Listing of Water Efficient Terminal Fittings

A dripping tap wastes at least 5,500 litres of water a year while remembering to turn off the tap while brushing teeth will save 6 litres per minute¹. The BRE Global Certification and Listing of Water Efficient Terminal Fittings scheme includes; flow restrictor and aerator devices for terminal fittings including taps and showers. The scheme will confirm the flowrate of the product tested at 3bar dynamic pressure and indicate the variability of; the determined flowrate with pressure and the outflow temperature with supply temperature (for aerated showers only).

By certificating flowrates for terminal fittings which are less than those generally in current use, there is the opportunity to contribute towards the credits determined under the Code for Sustainable Homes. Credits for water saving appliances are also being considered in EcoHomes and components of BREEAM (BRE's Environmental Assessment Method).

 

Certification Process
