Energy Saving Recommended Products
The Energy Saving Trust is one of the UK's leading organisations set up to address the damaging effects of climate change. Its' aim is to cut emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) - the main greenhouse gas causing climate change - by promoting the sustainable and efficient use of energy. The Energy Saving Trust is an independent, non-profit making organisation backed by the Government. It provides impartial information and advice and has a network of advice centres in the UK specifically designed to help people take action to save energy.
The Energy Saving Recommended scheme
This was launched in 2000 by the Energy Saving Trust to identify the most energy efficient products on the market. The scheme has been developed as an easy and instantly recognisable way for consumers to identify energy saving products.
The Energy Saving Recommended label
This is a Certification Mark registered with the UK Patent Office. Where product groups can be differentiated by their energy saving characteristics, the scheme aims to endorse the top 20% of products on the basis of their energy performance.
To gain certification a product must meet a set of strict criteria. These are developed with the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders, and are reviewed on an annual basis to ensure the scheme continues to drive market improvements in energy performance.
Energy Saving Recommended currently operates across 5 product sectors, with manufacturers and suppliers providing over 2000 certified products from 24 different product groups. In addition, membership of the scheme also includes retailers of certified products, who are licensed to use the ESR label on products at point of sale. Product categories currently included within the scheme are:
• Domestic appliances - washing machines, dishwashers, cold appliances, electric and gas fired tumble dryers, and kettles
• Consumer electronics - integrated digital televisions, simple terrestrial set top boxes, digital television recorders and energy saving mains controllers
