Launch of 'Glass Ship' a sustainability first for Italy

19/11/2014

Nave de Vero, a new retail development near Venice, has become the first shopping centre in Italy to be awarded a BREEAM sustainability rating of Very Good.

Nave de Vero 2The name Nave de Vero – or ‘glass ship’ in English – is a homage to the Venice’s maritime past and reflects the striking glass structure around the main entrance, which looks like the prow of a ship.

The Centre has been developed by Dutch-based international retail developer, Corio.

“We have worked hard throughout the centre to use sustainable materials and have asked our retailers to follow suit,” says Gino Antonacci, COO of Corio Italia. “Since the beginning of the project, the team has been fully involved and focused on the BREEAM assessment method according to the CSR policy of Corio Group. The design, choice of materials, use of LED lighting to drastically cut energy use, solar panels and use of alternative modes of transport are just a few of the positive features of the project. We have also installed the latest building management systems to ensure the indoor climate is optimal and energy bills are kept as low as possible. After all, in the end this benefits everyone.”

Nave de Vero certificate 2“This is a terrific achievement by the Corio team and a tribute to their commitment to sustainable retail space. Corio have worked hard to create a positive shopping experience, good for tenants and visitors and one which minimises the impact on the environment” says Gavin Dunn, Director of BREEAM.

Corio has paid tribute to the enthusiastic co-operation of all of the tenants occupying the shopping centre, throughout the entire process of the final fit-out. This was a key element in Nave de Vero’s BREEAM success. Corio also acknowledge the important work by the project’s architects, London-based Design International, in terms of developing a design and specifying materials to meet BREEAM’s demanding sustainability criteria, in co-operation with Manens-Tifs s.p.a. for the MEP design and BREEAM consultancy, with Tecnostudio s.r.l. for project management and detailed design and contractors Moretti Contract s.r.l.

Nave de Vero has been developed in line with Corio’s target of achieving a minimum BREEAM rating of Good for all of the company’s new build and redevelopment retail projects. This is a fundamental part of its policy to integrate sustainability fully into the concept and design of development projects, in order to create flexible and future-proof centres.

CORIO is a leading pan-European retail property company, specialising in the selection, development, redevelopment and management of shopping centers. Corio currently has operations in seven countries: Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. The portfolio consists of 57 shopping centers, offering space to more than 5,000 retailers to operate their businesses and hosting around 400 million visitors across the portfolio. Corio's headquarters are in Utrecht, Netherlands. The strategy of Corio is to create Favourite Meeting Places, as the success of a shopping center originates from the number of visitors we can attract: sustainable centers where people like to meet, spend time and shop; places they want to return to. The company's shares are traded on Euronext NYSE in Amsterdam. Under Dutch law, Corio is a closed-end fiscal investment institution (FBI). It has SIIC status in France. Since March 2008, Corio has been included in the AEX, the Dutch blue-chip index of 25 leading shares, as well as in EPRA, GPR, STOXX Europe 600, EURO STOXX, FTSE4 Good, DJSI and World, ASPI, Euronext Vigeo 120, and ECPI. Corio integrates sustainability fully in the concept and design of centre developments in order to create flexible and future- proof centres. From the very early stages of concept and design up to the completion and delivery of the centre, all measures are taken to have the lowest impact on the environment. To that end Corio has the ambition level of achieving BREEAM (re)development certificates with the qualification of at least ‘Good’. We see ample opportunity to create energy efficient and sustainable buildings by integrating state of the art innovation in technology. To achieve our ambition in creating “near zero energy” centres however, a different approach is required. By working together, we will create sustainable value for all our stakeholders.
